The Lee & Joe Jamail Skatepark, originally opened in 2008, was the first world-class, in-ground skatepark in the Houston area. This state-of-the-art, public 30,000 square-foot in-ground facility underwent a renovation in 2017 to address lighting issues, add spectator seating, and shade structures. Existing light poles were reused but relocated to provide clean lines of sight and were retrofitted with new LED heads for improved maintenance and control of the light. Because the park is closely neighbored by an amphitheater venue to the north and Buffalo Bayou trails and recreational areas to the south, light trespass and glare were major concerns. Carefully selected beam patterns and control mechanisms allow for suitable lighting within the skatepark, yet very little spill light outside its boundaries.
